Hampshire County Council has already pledged to slash services and as a part of this has opened consultation on the future of three residential homes, Addenbroke in Gosport, Cornerways in Winchester and Thurlston in Fleet.
HCC is proposing to close these homes, saying that they are no longer fit for purpose. However, Hampshire UNISON are concerned that this is a privatisation by the back door, with HCC already securing places for the homes’ residents in private care.
The County Council has over £300m in its reserves and it would be a drop in the ocean to bring these homes up to standard.
The budget cuts over the next two years will have a massive impact on vital care to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. UNISON intends to be at the forefront of a campaign to not only defend the three homes currently under threat, but to fight to defend jobs and services across the county.
UNISON will seek to work with any other trade union, political or community groups who are opposed to cuts in local authority services. We welcome the support of individuals as well, and are seeking to build a campaign across the broadest layer of local people.
Please attend these meetings if you can and encourage others to do the same. They will be a chance for local people to have their say on these proposed closures and to plan a campaign to save them.
